Tennessee Hispanic Community in Mourning After Tragic Tree-Fall Accident

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. – The Hispanic community in the Chattanooga area is grieving deeply after a tragic accident early Wednesday morning, when a large tree, weakened by water-saturated ground, fell onto a car on South Moore Road in East Ridge, claiming the lives of three people: a child and two adults.

Authorities identified the victims as 29-year-old driver Yuri Tomas Vicente López, 27-year-old front-seat passenger Giomara Epifania Vásquez, and Emma Vicente, a little girl just 3 years old who was in the back seat. All were members of the local Hispanic community.

The accident also brought down power lines, cutting electricity from the 1100 block to Ringgold Road and disabling the main traffic signal at that intersection. The tragedy unfolded amid intense rainfall Tuesday night, when nearly 7 inches of water fell in just a few hours, causing flooding, the closure of Interstate 24, and dozens of road shutdowns across Hamilton County.

East Ridge Assistant Police Chief Josh Creel reported that emergency and rescue crews are still working in affected areas to assess damage and provide immediate assistance. Authorities are also searching for a man last seen Tuesday night crossing floodwaters on East Brainerd Road who has not yet been found.

Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp has declared a state of emergency, which remains in effect as more rain is forecast in the coming days. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly expressed his commitment to supporting affected families and coordinating the city’s response to this natural disaster.

According to social media posts, those wishing to help the victims’ families can take donations to Tienda Quetzal, which is collecting contributions to support them during this painful time.

Today, beyond the statistics and official reports, the loss of Yuri, Giomara, and little Emma leaves an immense void in their families and in the entire Hispanic community, which now comes together in solidarity, seeking strength in this moment of sorrow. The images of this tragedy serve as a reminder of the devastating impact natural disasters can have on human lives—and of the importance of caring for and supporting one another.
